Multiple studies have shown that BPA can induce cognitive disorders following both single and repeated exposure. While these effects have been studied in the hippocampus and cortex, they have not been extensively explored in the basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCN), whose reduction has been directly linked to the degree of cognitive impairment. It has been shown that BPA exposure can alter the activity levels of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and its variants, as well as the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) levels in other brain regions. ACh is responsible for maintaining cellular viability, thus its alteration could lead to BFCN death... %~
