T1 Enfermedad mental y monomanía. Estudio de Tesis doctorales en España (1850-1864)

AB El concepto de monomanía tuvo especial interés para una teoría de la actividad mental, tanto normal como patológica. Se inició en España con la traducción de la obra de Pinel y Esquirol, y el debate estuvo especialmente presente en las décadas centrales del siglo XIX. La polémica presentaba diferentes perspectivas: religiosa, filosófica, psicológica, médica, judicial, sociopolítica. Las cuestiones sobre alma-cuerpo, mentalismo-organicismo, libertad-determinismo, eran nucleares. Pero también se daban otros ingredientes sobre el status profesional de los médicos y sus relaciones con abogados y jueces. El debate se instaló en un nivel especulativo, muy condicionado por la doctrina de la iglesia, en vez de atenerse a observaciones empíricas y estudios críticos. [ABSTRACT]The concept of monomania was especially interesting for the mental activity theory, normal and pathological. It began in Spain with the translation of Pinel and Esquirol books;beside it, the debate was so important in the central decades of the XIX century. The polemic had different pespectives: religious, philosophical, psychological, medical, judicial, and sociopolitical. The questions about mind and body, mentalism and organicism, freedom anddeterminism were fundamental. But there were also other ingredients about the professional status of the physicians and their relationship with lawyers and judges. In the doctoral dissertations we analize, the debate was very influenced by the catholic doctrine instead ofabiding by empirical observations and c1inical studies.
