RT Journal Article T1 Psychomotor Development of Children from an Iodine-Deficient Region A1 Costeira, Maria José A1 Oliveira, Pedro A1 Correia Santos, Nadine A1 Ares, Susana A1 Sáenz-Rico de Santiago, María Belén A1 Morreale de Escobar, Gabriella A1 Almeida Palha, Joana AB Objectives To assess the psychomotor development of the progeny of women from a moderately iodine deficient area for whom thyroid function during pregnancy was measured. Study design The development of 86 children was assessed by the Bayley Scale of Infant Development at 12, 18,and 24 months. Results Maternal serum free thyroxine (FT4) levels in the first trimester of pregnancy were the major determinant ofpsychomotor development at 18 and 24 months. Children born from mothers with FT4 levels <25th percentile (<10pg/mL) had an OR of 2.1 for mild-to-severe delay. Furthermore, alterations in behavior were already observed at 12 months and were related to subsequent changes in development. Neonatal thyroid status did not influence development. Conclusions This study highlights the need to implement active measures of iodine supplementation pericon ceptionally and during pregnancy and lactation because the negative effects on development and behavior mightbe prevented through preemptive action PB Elservier SN 0022-3476 SN 1097-6833 YR 2011 FD 2011-02-25 LK https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14352/100132 UL https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14352/100132 LA eng NO Costeira, M.J., Oliveira, P., Santos, N.C., Ares, S., Saenz-Rico, B., De Escobar, G.M.and Palha, J.A.
