AB Este artículo analiza la imagen económica de los Estados Unidos construida por los viajeros españoles del primer tercio del siglo XX, que hasta ahora no había sido estudiada específicamente. Para algunos, dicho país era un modelo de modernización económica a imitar, basado en la innovación tecnológica, la gran empresa y el “buen gobierno”, que generaba prosperidad y oportunidades para todos. Para otros, sin embargo, el capitalismo norteamericano constituía un mal ejemplo, dados sus negativos efectos morales y sociales (materialismo, estandarización deshumanizadora, maquinismo, monopolios, desigualdad, etc.). Curiosamente, los argumentos económicos anti- y pro-americanos fueron elaborados indistintamente tanto por autores “progresistas” como conservadores.
AB This article analyzes the economic image of the United States built by the Spanish travelers of the first third of the 20th century, which until now had not been specifically studied. For some, this country was a model of economic modernization to be imitated, based on technological innovation, big business and good governance, which generated prosperity and opportunities for all. For others, however, North American capitalism was a bad example, given its negative moral and social effects (materialism, dehumanizing standardization, machinism, monopolies, inequality, etc.). Interestingly, the anti- and pro-American economic arguments were elaborated indistinctly by both “progressive” and conservative authors.
