%X The seven sacraments are the signs by which Christians are given the path to the salvation of their soul, sanctifying certain ritualized moments throughout their life cycle. From the 11th and 12th centuries, thanks to writers like Peter Lombard or Thomas Aquinas, we know that they are organized in seven: baptism, confirmation, penance, eucharist, holly orders, marriage and extreme unction. Each sacrament is represented by alluding to the most significant ritual scene in the medieval imaginary. From the 14th century we find iconographic programs of sacramental themes that relate the sacraments with virtues and vices, with their iconographic prefigures in the Bible, or with the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The iconography of the sacraments should not be confused with that of the sacramental (consecration of churches, blessings, or funerals, among others). %~
