T2 Terrorism and politics: A review of criticims of the literature

AB A pesar de que la literatura sobre terrorismo puede considerarse relativamente joven, este ha resultado ser un campo muy prolífico, especialmente tras los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2011. Un campo en el que se ha escrito más de lo que se ha investigado, en parte debido a los problemas a los que han tenido que hacer frente este tipo de trabajos. Este artículo busca hacer una revisión de las principales críticas que ha recibido esta literatura a nivel internacional (la falta de acuerdo sobre la definición del término terrorismo, la ausencia de métodos estadísticos, un uso excesivo de datos secundarios, la falta de colaboración entre los autores, el predominio de las contribuciones puntuales, la existencia de lagunas, etc.) y comprobar hasta qué punto estas son extrapolables al caso español. El objetivo último es dar cuenta de la existencia de una serie de problemas en este tipo de investigaciones, también a nivel nacional.
AB The literature on terrorism, even if a relatively young field, has proved to be very prolific, especially since the events of 11 September 2001. Nonetheless, and probably due to the difficulties that this type of research confronts, the growing number of publications has not been accompanied by a similar growth in academic research. This article reviews the main criticism this literature has received at the international level (the definitional problem, a scarcity of statistical analyses, an overreliance on secondary sources, a tendency for authors to work alone, the large number of onetime contributors, the possible gaps, and so forth) and seeks to verify if these criticisms are consistent with the Spanish case. The article’s principal aim is to point out the problems posed by the research on this topic, both at the international and the national (Spanish) level.
