AB José de Madrazo fue un personaje poliédrico y expansivo cuya trayectoria determinó el curso del arte en España en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Precursor de una relación activa y moderna con los medios de comunicación de su época entre los artistas de su tiempo y de su círculo, su participación en periódicos y su influencia en la construcción de instituciones artísticas importantes, como la Real Academia de Bellas Artes, el Real Museo de Pintura y Escultura y el Real Establecimiento Litográfico, redujeron su dimensión artística en favor de otros aspectos de su trayectoria de cara a su posteridad. También el hecho de que ésta quedara en manos de sus descendientes pintores, motivó la perpetuación de un recuerdo interesado que redujo francamente su condición de pintor –y por lo tanto aún más la de dibujante-, frente a otras que eran más convenientes en la coyuntura social de sus herederos...
AB José de Madrazo, a trailblazing Spanish artist, distinguished himself from his passivecontemporaries by actively embracing the media of his time. His influence resonatedstrongly in newspapers and pivotal artistic institutions, including the Royal Academy ofFine Arts, the Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture, and the Royal LithographicEstablishment. Regrettably, this multifaceted career focus somewhat overshadowed histrue artistic prowess.Despite his indispensable contribution to the art world, Madrazo's role as a draftsmanremained obscured, much like the drawings that this thesis brings to light, hidden awayin the house of one of his descendants. Regrettably, past scholars showed scant interestin delving deeply into his work, and during the 20th century, Madrazo's reputationwaned, eclipsed by the formidable presence of Francisco de Goya and further hamperedby the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War...
