RT Journal Article T1 Mg K-edge XANES of sepiolite and palygorskite A1 Sánchez del Río, Manuel A1 Súarez Barrios, Mercedes A1 García Romero, Emilia A1 Alianelli, Lucia A1 Felici, Roberto A1 Martinetto, Pauline A1 Dooryhée, Eric A1 Reyes Valerio, Constantino A1 Borgatti, Francesco A1 Doyle, Bryan A1 Giglia, Angelo A1 Mahne, Nicola A1 Pedio, Maddalena A1 Nannarone, Stefano AB We present a study of the Mg K-edge on sepiolite and palygorskite performed at the INFM BEAR beamline at Elettrasynchrotron light source (Trieste). These two clays, although having very similar structures, show some differentfeatures in their near-edge. Mg is in octahedral coordination with oxygens, hydroxyl groups or water, for both palygorskiteand sepiolite. The differences found in the near-edge seem to reflect the fact that, on average, an Mg atomin palygorskite ‘‘sees’’ less Mg in higher coordination shells than sepiolite.
