This paper offers an approach to his theory and practice of translating, which sometimes seems to contradict each other. Through a detailed analysis of his theoretical assumptions and a comparison with his translation practice (comparing the Latin originals with their Romance versions), it is shown to what extent both are congruent and, above all, how translation is at a crossroads that will lead it from purely medieval uses to others that are more respectful of the target language and the recipients, more humanistic. %~
