AB We report the discovery of massif-type anorthositesin the Andean basement of the WesternSierras Pampeanas of Argentina. U–Pb zircondating (by sensitive high-resolution ionmicroprobe) of a cogenetic gabbronorite dyke yields ages of1070 ± 41 Ma for igneous emplacement and 431 ± 40 Ma formetamorphism. These anorthosites are petrologically andgeochemically comparable with those of the Grenville provinceof Laurentia. Palaeogeographical reconstructions ofRodinia at 1.0–1.1 Ga suggest that the Sierras Pampeanasanorthosites were part of a large anorthosite province in thelate Mesoproterozoic.
