Here we argue insteadthat these lineations could have been formed at a convergent platemargin through collision and accretion of terranes. A similar processproduced banded magnetic anomalies, similar in geometry andeven in size to those in Earth’s North American Cordillera. Becauseonly sparse and generally weak anomalies have been detectedin the martian northern lowlands, which could constitute an analogto the terrestrial oceanic crust, it is possible that the magneticfield stopped its activity while crustal recycling was still active inMars. %~
