%T Manly hearts in female bodies. Representing holy Dominican women in Castile in medieval times

%X Despite the scarcity of representations of medieval Dominican nuns and mulieres religiosae, these images offer valuable information about the origins and development of the cult of certain female Dominican saints, the devotions and spiritual concerns of their patrons and main promoters, and the role played by the female branch of the Order of Friars Preachers in its reform throughout the 15th century. The present paper examines the iconography of three Dominican holy women: saint Catherine of Siena, saint Margaret of Hungary, and Blessed Helen of Vezsprém. New possible interpretations and lines of research will be suggested through the study of the spiritual virilization of these holy women who ended up assuming masculine virtues and bearing manly hearts.
%X A pesar de la escasez de representaciones de monjas y mulieres religiosae medievales, estas imágenes ofrecen una valiosa información sobre los orígenes y el desarrollo del culto a ciertos santas dominicas, las devociones e inquietudes espirituales de sus mecenas y principales promotores, y el papel desempeñado por la rama femenina de la Orden de Predicadores en su reforma a lo largo del siglo xv. Este artículo examina la iconografía de tres santas dominicas: Santa Catalina de Siena, Santa Margarita de Hungría y la beata Elena de Vezsprém. Se sugerirán nuevas posibles interpretaciones y líneas de investigación a través del estudio de la virilización espiritual de estas santas que llegaron a asumir virtudes masculinas y a llevar corazones de hombre.
