AB Despite people’s concern for the environment, there are psychological barriers that make it difficult to adopt a pro-environmental lifestyle, including difficulties in estimating the environmental impact of behaviours. In a first study (n = 374), we see that, when estimating the environmental impact of our own behaviours, we believe that pro-environmental actions can offset the environmental impact of those that are harmful to the environment.In addition, we believe that others have a greater impact. A second study (n = 497) finds that people who believe they have a lower impact on the environment than others and less than should be deemed acceptable display less intent to behave proenvironmentally. These findings highlight the difficulty people face in knowing the environmental consequences of their own behaviour, as well as the importance of perceptions regarding others’ behaviours in explaining the intent to behave proenvironmentally.
AB A pesar de la preocupación de las personas por el medio ambiente, existen barreras psicológicas que dificultan la adopción de un estilo de vida proambiental, entre las que se encuentran las dificultades en la estimación del impacto ambiental que suponen las conductas. En un primer estudio (n = 374) se observa que, al estimar el impacto ambiental de las propias conductas se percibe que las acciones proambientales pueden compensar el impacto ambiental de las dañinas para el medio ambiente. Además, se estima que los demás impactan en mayor medida. En un segundo estudio (n = 497) se encontró que aquellas personas que perciben que impactan menos en el ambiente que los demás y menos de lo que debería ser aceptable muestran menor intención de conducta proambiental. Por tanto, se pone de manifiesto la dificultad de las personas para conocer las consecuencias ambientales de sus conductas, así como la importancia de la percepción de las conductas de los otros a la hora de explicar la intención de actuar de forma proambiental.
