AB The relations between the various self-concepts and the emotional consequences of the discrepancy between them have been a favorite center of attention for personality theorists. This study analyzes (a) the relation between the magnitude of the discrepancy (actual/own:ideal/own, ideal/own:social) and the intensity of emotional states (social anxiety and depression), and (b) the possible correspondence between type of discrepancy and type of emotional state. The results show a linear relation between the magnitude of the discrepancy among representations of the self and emotional intensity, together with a high specificity between type of discrepancy and type of emotional state: on one side, a strong correspondence between the actual/own:ideal/own discrepancy and depression and, on the other, between the ideal/own:social discrepancy and social anxiety. Finally, the theoretical implications of the results are discussed.
AB Las relaciones entre los distintos autoconceptos y las consecuencias emocionales de la discrepancia entre ellos han sido el centro de atención favorito de los teóricos de la personalidad. Este estudio analiza (a) la relación entre la magnitud de la discrepancia (real/propia:ideal/propia, ideal/propia:social) y la intensidad de los estados emocionales (ansiedad social y depresión), y (b) la posible correspondencia entre tipo de discrepancia y tipo de estado emocional. Los resultados muestran una relación lineal entre la magnitud de la discrepancia entre las representaciones del yo (self) y la intensidad emocional, junto con una alta especificidad entre el tipo de discrepancia y el tipo de estado emocional: por un lado, una fuerte correspondencia entre la discrepancia real/propio:ideal /propio y depresión y, por otro, entre la discrepancia ideal/propio:social y ansiedad social. Finalmente, se discuten las implicaciones teóricas de los resultados.
