AB This chapter provides a gender and feminist analysis of relationships and marriages within the Sikh community in contemporary Spain. Emphasizing the pivotal role of marriages in maintaining family and social structures, and recognizing the value assigned to young women as crucial for successful unions, this chapter explores the control exerted over young women, contrasting it with the relatively unrestricted agency of men. The distinct options available to Sikh men and women in navigating relationship and marriage practices are considered, as well as the specific strategies employed by Sikhs in Spain to secure optimal living conditions for themselves and their extended families. The analysis addresses how young women, facing the prospect of marriage, negotiate their circumstances and exercise agency. Drawing from an 18-month multi-sited ethnographic research project, this work integrates insights from a comprehensive examination of relevant literature to illuminate the unique dynamics of Sikhs in Spain.
AB Este capítulo ofrece un análisis de género y feminista de las relaciones y matrimonios en el seno de la comunidad sij en la España contemporánea. Al destacar el papel central del matrimonio en el sostenimiento de las estructuras familiares y sociales, y al reconocer el valor asignado a las mujeres jóvenes como pieza clave para el éxito de estas uniones, el texto examina los mecanismos de control ejercidos sobre ellas, en contraste con la relativa libertad de agencia de los hombres. Se abordan las diferentes opciones que tienen hombres y mujeres sij a la hora de gestionar las prácticas de relación y matrimonio, así como las estrategias específicas desarrolladas por la diáspora sij en España para asegurar condiciones de vida óptimas para sí mismos y sus familias extensas. El análisis presta especial atención a cómo las jóvenes, ante la perspectiva del matrimonio, negocian sus circunstancias y ejercen agencia. Basado en una investigación etnográfica multi-situada de 18 meses, este trabajo integra hallazgos empíricos con una revisión exhaustiva de la literatura académica para iluminar las dinámicas particulares de la comunidad sij en España.
