T1 Argumentative function of Hercules in Collenuccio’s Philotimo (1407) and Gutierre de Cetina’s translation (1538-1554)

AB RESUMEN: Este artículo analiza la función argumentativa del divinizado héroe griego Hércules en el «Philotimo» de Pandolfo Collenuccio (1497), un diálogo satírico donde se abordan de manera crítica el honor y la nobleza en la sociedad cortesana, y la traducción española de Gutierre de Cetina (1538-1554). Se pretende comparar las razones que explican por qué el héroe divino tiene la capacidad de resolver, como juez, la disputa entre una cabeza ignorante y su gorra: tanto en el original como en la traducción, la autoridad que se otorga a Hércules deriva de la virtud y el esfuerzo que caracterizan al héroe griego; al mismo tiempo, mientras que en el texto original dicha autoridad se debe también a la intención de Collenuccio de honrar a su protector, Ercole I d’Este, por medio de un juego retórico basado en la homonimia, en la traducción desaparece dicha función laudatoria; de tal modo que se exponen solamente las ideas morales del diálogo y su mensaje universal.
AB ABSTRACT: This article analyses the argumentative function of the Greek divine hero Hercules in Pandolfo Collenuccio’s “Philotimo” (1497), a satiric dialogue making criticism about honor and nobility at court society, and Gutierre de Cetina’s Spanish translation (1538-1554). The aim is to compare the reasons why the divine hero is able to solve as a judge the dispute taking place between an ignorant head and her cap: both in the original and in the translation, the authority given to Hercules derives from the virtue and effort characterizing the Greek hero; at the same time, whilst in the original text this authority is also due to Collenuccio’s intention of honoring his patron, Ercole I d’Este, by means of a rhetorical play based on homonym; in the translation any laudatory function is omitted instead, thus displaying just the moral ideas of the dialogue and its universal message.
