AB La Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando conserva una colección de vaciados de esculturas halladas en la Villa de los Papiros de Herculano y que fue donada por Carlos III a finales del siglo XVIII. Del proceso de elaboración de los mismos así como de su transporte a Madrid ha quedado abundante documentación tanto en los archivos napolitanos como en los españoles. Se analizan aquí los motivos que impulsaron al rey a encargar estas obras que estuvieron instaladas en el palacio del Buen Retiro hasta su ingreso en la Real Academia
AB The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando keeps a collection of plaster casts taken from the sculptures found at the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum. These sculptures were donated by the King Charles III to the Royal Academy in the eighteenth century. Spanish and Italian archives document thoroughly how this collection was formed, how the casts were made and how they were sent to Madrid from the Royal Museum at Portici. This article focuses on the reasons why the King wanted to have this cast collection at his palace of Buen Retiro and why he donated it to the Royal Academy.
