%0 Journal Article %A Horra del Barco, Raúl de la %A Benito Moreno, María Isabel %A López Gómez, José %A Arche, Alfredo %A Fernández Barrenechea, José María %A Luque del Villar, Francisco Javier %T Palaeoenvironmental significance of Late Permian palaeosols inthe South-Eastern Iberian Ranges, Spain %D 2008 %@ 0037-0746 %U https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14352/50321 %X The Late Permian (Wuchiapingian) Alcotas Formation in the SE Iberian Rangesconsists of one red alluvial succession where abundant soil profiles developed.Detailed petrographical and sedimentological studies in seven sections ofthe Alcotas Formation allow six different types of palaeosols, withdistinctive characteristics and different palaeogeographical distribution, to bedistinguished throughout the South-eastern Iberian Basin. These characteristicsare, in turn, related to topographic, climatic and tectonic controls. The verticaldistribution of the palaeosols is used to differentiate the formation in three partsfrom bottom to top showing both drastic and gradual vertical upwardspalaeoenvironmental changes in the sections. Reconstruction ofpalaeoenvironmental conditions based on palaeosols provides evidence forunderstanding the events that occurred during the Late Permian, some fewmillions of years before the well-known Permian-Triassic global crisis. %~
