RT Journal Article T1 Lithospheric folding in Iberia A1 Cloetingh, Sierd A1 Burov, E. A1 Beekman, Fred A1 Andeweg, Bernd A1 Andriessen, Paul A1 García Castellanos, Daniel A1 Vicente Muñoz, Gerardo De A1 Vegas Martínez, Ramón AB Integration of stress indicator data, gravity data, crustal kinematics data, and analysis of topography andrecent vertical motions demonstrates the occurrence ofconsistently oriented spatial patterns of large-scaleAlpine to recent intraplate deformation in Iberia. Theinferred upper crustal and lithospheric deformationpatterns and the timing of the associated expressionsat or near the surface support the existence of a closecoupling with plate boundary processes operating atthe margins of Iberia. Patterns of lithosphere andupper crustal folds are oriented perpendicular to themain axis of present-day intraplate compression inIberia inferred from structural analysis of stressindicator data and focal mechanism solutions. Thesefindings suggest the presence of lithospheric folds, with wavelengths compatible with theoreticalpredictions of folding wavelengths of Variscanlithosphere. Stress-induced intraplate deformationset up by plate interactions is compatible withindications for the absence of present-day deepmantle-lithosphere interactions inferred from seismictomography.
