%X The great financial crisis of 2008 is a very relevant event that has called the attention of innumerable analysts and has produced a large literature around its causes and effects.If we refer to Latin America, this crisis has been the first one not to badly hit the region since the beginning of the twentieth century. Despite this striking evidence, analysts have not put much focus on this particular fact, and generally they dispatch it by invoking the benign terms of trade, due to the high prices of commodities driven by the demand from China. We believe that there are more than extra inflows from China to explain the behaviour of the region during this crisis.We defend that apart from the conjunctural effects derived from the relative high prices of commodities around 2008, the region is in a process of structural/institutional change that is contributing to a better response to crises, and particularly to economic crises...
%X La gran crisis financiera de 2008 es un evento muy relevante que ha llamado la atención de innumerables analistas y ha generado una extensa literatura en torno a sus causas y efectos. Si nos referimos a América Latina, esta crisis ha sido la primera que no golpeó severamente a la región desde el comienzo del siglo XX. A pesar de esta evidencia impactante, los analistas no han puesto mucho énfasis en este hecho particular, y generalmente lo despachan invocando los benignos términos de intercambio, debido a los altos precios de las materias primas impulsados por la demanda de China. Creemos que hay más que simples flujos adicionales desde China para explicar el comportamiento de la región durante esta crisis. Defendemos que, aparte de los efectos coyunturales derivados de los altos precios relativos de las materias primas alrededor de 2008, la región está en un proceso de cambio estructural/institucional que está contribuyendo a una mejor respuesta a las crisis, y particularmente a las crisis económicas...
