AB RESUMEN:Es bien sabido que el estudio de los usos gráficos del español del siglo XIX constituye un ámbito poco atendido por los investigadores, algo que determina que se mantenga aún entre estos la idea de que en la época existe cierto «caos ortográfico» que solo se solucionará gracias a la labor de la Real Academia. Partiendo del análisis de una serie de cartas escritas en los primeros años del siglo, el presente trabajo pretende describir los usos gráficos plasmados en ellas y, de paso, demostrar que el supuesto «caos» en la ortografía del momento no es tal, sino que lo que existe es más bien una situación de «estandarización en proceso», con todo lo que eso supone desde el punto de vista gráfico.
AB ABSTRACT:It is well known that the study of the graphical uses of nineteenth-century Spanish is a field that has been neglected by researchers, which results in the persistence among these scholars of the idea that, at the time, there was a degree of «orthographic chaos», which would only be resolved through the work of the Royal Academy. Based on an analysis of a series of letters written in the first few years of the century, this study aims to describe the graphical uses appearing in them and, at the same time, demonstrates that the alleged chaos in the orthography of the time is a misconception, and that what exists is more a situation of «standardisation in progress», with all what this implies from a graphical perspective.
