AB This chapter analyzes the relationship between the European Union (EU) and regional integration processes in the Americas, particularly NAFTA, Mercosur, and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). It highlights the dual nature of this relationship. On one hand, the EU has served as a reference point for policymakers in Latin America, especially in Mercosur, where aspects of the European experience have inspired institutional design and cooperation mechanisms. On the other hand, the EU’s engagement with American regionalism is driven by strategic and economic interests, mainly the need to preserve market access and remain competitive with the United States in the region.The chapter also stresses that EU's action towards these integration processes is shaped by its complex internal governance, which can produce fragmented or inconsistent policies abroad. Finally, Europe is no longer unique in regionalism, and cross-regional interactions increasingly influence global integration dynamics.
AB Este capítulo analiza la relación entre la Unión Europea (UE) y los procesos de integración regional en las Américas, en particular el Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (TLCAN), Mercosur y el Área de Libre Comercio de las Américas (ALCA). Se destaca la doble naturaleza de esta relación. Por un lado, la UE ha funcionado como referencia para responsables políticos en América Latina, especialmente en Mercosur, donde ciertos elementos de la experiencia europea han inspirado el diseño institucional y los mecanismos de cooperación. Por otro lado, el compromiso de la UE con el regionalismo americano responde a intereses estratégicos y económicos, primordialmente a la necesidad de mantener el acceso a los mercados y competir con la influencia de Estados Unidos en la región.El capítulo subraya también que la acción de la UE hacia estos procesos de integración está condicionada por su compleja gobernanza interna, lo que puede resultar en políticas fragmentadas o inconsistentes. Finalmente, la interacción interregional se vuelve cada vez más importante para comprender las dinámicas contemporáneas de integración.
