The plant is considered apseudocereal and has a high oil and protein content. Mayansand Aztecs used it as a medicinal product and food supplementfor added endurance. Its nutraceutical properties are dueto high content in dietary fiber, natural antioxidants, andunsaturated fatty acids (60% α-linolenic acid).
