T1 Charles Chaplin vs Buster Keaton. Análisis textual de "The kid" y "The General"

AB El tema fundamental de esta tesis es el estudio de los textos cómicos de Chaplin y Keaton a través del análisis de dos de sus películas más valoradas: The Kid (1921) de Chaplin y The General (1926) de Keaton. Abordamos la cuestión desde la Teoría del Texto. Nuestro principal objetivo es llevar a cabo un enfoque particular de la poética de estos autores en la cual juega un papel fundamental la comicidad cinematográfica. En nuestro primer acercamiento al texto cómico y al estudio de sus estructuras significativas a través de Freud, Bergson, Greimas y el Grupo μ lo hemos definido como caracterizado por poseer una peculiar estructura de significación paradójica. Asimismo hemos destacado, siguiendo a Bajtin, como la imagen grotesca es un elemento propio del universo de lo cómico. Y hemos expuesto en un breve recorrido por la historia literaria occidental su lugar en ella contextualizando el burlesco cinematográfico y haciendo mención a sus antecedentes. Nos ocupamos también, en la segunda parte de esta tesis, de la articulación de lo cómico con las estructuras narrativas en las que se inscribe. El elemento principal del texto cómico mudo es el gag visual. Ello nos lleva a concluir nuestro recorrido por la Comedia en la literatura occidental señalando que una de las raíces más directas del slapstick son los espectáculos populares herederos del Carnaval en los que la risa y el espectáculo son esenciales. Sin embargo, en lo cómico cinematográfico de la década de los 20 vemos aparecer historias complejas y un tipo de gag más elaborado. Por esta vía se incorpora el gag al relato y se recoge la tradición dramática de los textos cómicos reseñada anteriormente. En la obra de Buster Keaton y Charles Chaplin se produce una integración especialmente inteligente de lo cómico con la narrativa y el drama popular. Por lo tanto, al igual que otros clásicos, lo burlesco del 20 es un texto complejo, que absorbe diferentes elementos e influencias...
AB The core issue of this thesis is the study of Chaplin and Keaton’s comical texts through the analysis of two of its most valued films: The Kid (1921) by Chaplin and The General (1926) by Keaton. We will address the issue from the Text Theory. Our main goal is to perform a particular approach on these author’s poetics, in which film comedy plays a key role. To our first approach to the comical texts and the study of its significant structures through Freud, Bergson, Greimas and the μ Group, we have defined it as characterized by having a peculiar structure of paradoxical significance. We have also emphasized, following Bajtin, how the grotesque image is a proper element of the universe of the comic. And we have set out a brief tour through Western literary history, contextualizing the cinematic burlesque and mentioning its background. We also deal, in the second part of this thesis, with the articulating of the comic with the narrative structures in which it is enrolled. The main element on the silent comic texts is the visual gag. This leads us to conclude our tour through the Comedy on Western literature marking that one of the most direct slapstick roots are the popular shows, heirs of the Carnival in which laughter and spectacle is essential. However, in the comic films of the 20s we can observe complex stories and a more elaborate type of gag. In this way the gag joins to the story and the dramatic tradition of the comic texts we talked about before is gathered. In Buster Keaton and Charles Chaplin work, there is an especially intelligent integration of the comic with the narrative and popular drama.
