RT Journal Article T1 The Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point(GSSP) for base of the Bathonian Stage (MiddleJurassic), Ravin du Bès Section, SE France A1 Fernández López, Sixto Rafael A1 Pavia, Giulio A1 Erba, Elisabetta A1 Guiomar, Myette A1 Henriques, María Helena Paiva A1 Lanza, Roberto A1 Mangold, Charles A1 Morton, Nicol A1 Olivero, Davide A1 Tiraboschi, Daniele AB The Bathonian GSSP is defined at the base of limestonebed RB071 in the Ravin du Bès Section, Bas-Auranarea, southern Subalpine Chains (France). This sectionsatisfies most of the erquirements recommended by theInternational Commission on Stratigraphy. The exposureextends over 13 m in thickness. No vertical biofacies, ichnofacies or taphofacies changes, stratigraphic gapsor hiatuses have been recorded at the Bajocian-Bathoniantransition. Structural complexity, synsedimentary andtectonic disturbances, or important alterations bymetamorphism are not relevant constraints. There is awell-preserved, abundant and diverse fossil record, withkey markers (ammonites and nannofossils). The base ofBathonian Stage and Zigzag Zone corresponds to the firstoccurrence level of Gonolkites convergens Buckman thatcoincides with the first occurrence of Morphocerasparvum Wetzel. Calcareous nannofossils are present inall beds. The GSSP is below the Tethyan calcareousnannofossil NJT10b/11 zonal boundary (lowestWatznaueria barnesiae) and above the Bo real nannofossilNJ10/11 boundary (lowest Pseudoconus enigma).Regional analyses of sequence stratigraphy andmanganese chemostratigraphy are available. Spectralgamma-ray data corroborate interpretation of an EarlyBathonian deepening half-cycle of second order. The criteria of accessibility, conservation and protection areassured by the “Réserve Naturelle Géologique de HauteProvence”. The Cabo Mondego Section (Portugal) is theBathonian auxiliary section and point (ASSP) .T heproposal was voted by the Bathonian Working Group inDecember, 2007, and by the International Subcommissionon Jurassic Stratigraphy in March, 2008, approved bythe ICS in June 2008, and ratified by the IUGS in Ju,ly2008.
