RT Journal Article T1 Dynamics and Electrooptics of Vertically AlignedNematics With Induced Pretilt on SiOx A1 Otón Martínez, Eva A1 López Andrés, Sol A1 Carrasco Vela, Carlos A1 Cerrolaza, Beatriz A1 Bennis, Noureddine A1 Otón Sánchez, José Manuel AB The response time and contrast of vertically-alignednegative nematics depend critically on the aligning surface and itsinduced pretilt. Pretilt can be tuned up using obliquely evaporatedinorganic oxides as alignment surface.A thorough study of pretilt angles induced by aligning surfacesof thermally evaporated SiO has been carried out onseveral commercial and experimental negative nematic mixtures.Morphology of SiO with different evaporation angles has beenstudied by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy. Somemorphological variations appear at specific evaporation angles. These are related to the pretilt induced by the surface and to thedynamic response of the device.
