%X La relevancia del fútbol a nivel social y económico no ha cesado de crecer en el úl-timo siglo, convirtiéndose en un agente influyente en las relaciones internacionales. Los campeona-tos futbolísticos son un claro ejemplo de cómo el deporte, la política, la economía y la política exterior de los Estados confluyen en el área deportiva. Un ejemplo de ello es la Copa del Mundo de la FIFA de 1982 celebrada en España. Este evento deportivo de importante trascendencia para el país organizador fue una oportunidad de mostrar una imagen moderna y democrática de España y, a su vez, se convirtió en un elemento determinante para la toma de decisiones de otros países participan-tes como Reino Unido. Algunos problemas internos y exteriores británicos, como el hooliganismo y la guerra de las Malvinas, convergieron en torno a la celebración de este mega-evento y pudieron afectar al desarrollo campeonato y a las relaciones hispano-británicas con el contencioso de Gibraltar por resolver.
%X The social and economic relevance of football has grown steadily over the last century, making it an influential agent in international relations. Football tournaments are a clear example of how sport, politics, economics, and the foreign policy of States converge around sport. An example of this issue is the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. This important sporting event was an opportunity for the host country to show a modern and democratic image of Spain and, likewise, it became a decisive element in the decision-making process of other participating countries, such as the United Kingdom. Some internal and external British problems, such as hooliganism and the Falklands War, converged around the celebration of this mega-event, and they could affect the development of the championship and Spanish-British relations, with the Gibraltar dispute still to be resolved.
