T1 Analysis of the perception of the fan phenomenon: The case of the fans of Korean pop band BTS (A.R.M.Y.)

AB Este trabajo se centra en el fenómeno fan en la comunidad ARMY, seguidores de la banda de pop coreano BTS, como una manifestación representativa de la cultura popular contemporánea. El objetivo principal es el análisis de la percepción del fenómeno en dicha comunidad, explorando la formación de su identidad, sus estereotipos y sus connotaciones en comparación con otros tipos de fanatismo. Los hallazgos revelan que, por factores socioculturales y de género, el fandom ARMY suele ser desvalorizado frente a otras comunidades de fans. Esta deslegitimación deja de lado el sentido de pertenencia en torno al colectivo, capaz de movilizarse en masa e influir en la sociedad, aunque a menudo es estigmatizada por otras comunidades y medios de comunicación. Como consecuencia, persiste la imagen del fan obsesivo e histérico, alejada de una admiración saludable.
AB This research focuses on the fan phenomenon in the ARMY community, followers of the Korean pop band BTS, as a representative manifestation of contemporary popular culture. The main objective is to analyze the perception of thephenomenon in this community, exploring the formation of its identity, its stereotypes and its connotations in comparison with other types of fanaticism. The findings reveal that, due to sociocultural and gender factors, ARMY fandom is often devalued compared to other fan communities. This delegitimization neglects the sense of belonging around the collective, capable of mobilizing en masse and influencing society, although it is often stigmatized by other communities and media. As a consequence, the image of the obsessive and hysterical fan persists, far from a healthy admiration.
