RT Journal Article T1 Student participation: between the twilight of the liberal model of democracy and the rise of neoliberal policies T2 Participación del alumnado: entre el ocaso del modelo liberal de democracia y el auge de las políticas neoliberales A1 García Pérez, Daniel A1 González-Lamas, Jara AB Student participation has become a relevant topic in the international debate oneducation. However, the conceptions of the meaning of participation and its practicalimplications are very heterogeneous. In this article, we review how educational policieshave conceived student participation in Western countries. First, we present ourconceptualization of student participation. Later, we explain the role of the liberal modelof democracy in shaping school democracy and student participation. Then, we discussthat this model is suffering a crisis due to two main factors. On the one hand, theorganisation of democratic processes in schools had limitations, which have beenidentified by many authors, institutions, and empirical studies. On the other hand, thepressure of the neoliberal agenda on standardisation and the emphasis on individualsuccess are leaving aside the interest of democratic aims. We illustrate the evolution ofeducation policies concerning student participation with the case analysis of the Spanishstate educational legislation. To conclude, we present some reflections about the futureof student participation.
