RT Journal Article T1 A pre-Rodinian ophiolite involved in the Variscan suture of Galicia (Cabo Ortegal Complex, NW Spain) A1 Sánchez Martínez, Sonia A1 Jeffries, Teresa E. A1 Arenas Martín, Ricardo A1 Fernández Suárez, Javier A1 García Sánchez, Raquel AB U–Pb dating of zircons from a metagabbro of the Purridoamphibolitic unit (Cabo Ortegal Complex, NW IberianMassif) yielded an age of 1159 ± 39 Ma, interpreted toapproximate the crystallization age of the gabbroic protolith.Considering the arc affinity of the metagabbroic rocks, theunit is interpreted as a pre-Rodinian ophiolite developed in aback-arc setting. It is suggested that the ophiolite wasobducted over the West African terranes during the assemblyof Rodinia. There, this terrane remained tectonically stableand facing an ocean for a long time, and eventually becamepart of the Gondwanan margin. The ophiolite was finallyinvolved in the Variscan suture of Galicia where it issandwiched between Palaeozoic rocks. The Purrido unit is sofar the only example of a Mesoproterozoic ophiolite in theEuropean Variscan belt, where pre-Neoproterozoic rocks arevery scarce and restricted to small exposures.
