T1 ‘Childish’ and ‘Minors’? Deconstructing Prejudice and Identity Transformation Among Spanish Women Religious During the Long Sixties

AB Abstract: This article explores the identity formation process undertaken by Spanish women's religious following the aggiornamento promoted by the Second Vatican Council. Specifically, it seeks to examine the context in which these women lived and acted, analysing the construction of their identities, their capacity for agency and transgression within ecclesiastical boundaries, as well as the meanings attributed to these actions. In doing so, the article investigates their agency with the primary objective of reconstructing the public debate generated by these renewal dynamics. To this end, it draws on archival materials, periodicals and other contemporary publications that formed the core of these public debates.
AB Resumen: Este artículo explora el proceso de formación de la identidad de las religiosas españolas tras el aggiornamento promovido por el Concilio Vaticano II. En concreto, busca examinar el contexto en el que vivieron y actuaron estas mujeres, analizando la construcción de sus identidades, su capacidad de agencia y transgresión dentro de los límites eclesiásticos, así como los significados atribuidos a estas acciones. Para ello, el artículo investiga su agencia con el objetivo principal de reconstruir el debate público generado por estas dinámicas de renovación. Para ello, se basa en materiales de archivo, publicaciones periódicas y otras publicaciones contemporáneas que constituyeron el núcleo de estos debates públicos.
