RT Journal Article T1 Photography and the Discovery of the Double Helix Structure of DNA A1 Cuevas Martín, José A1 Heglar, Laurence E. AB The development of X-ray diffraction photography was central to the discovery of the helical structure of DNA in 1953. Unfortunately the story of how this technique was developed receded into the background as subsequent attention focused on the moment of discovery by Watson and Crick. As a result the importance of photography as ‘data’ and the role it plays in scientific discovery is underplayed. We seek to rectify this situation by presenting this story and by drawing conclusions about the importance of this form of photography in scientific investigation as well as for the insights it gives us regarding the process of discovery.
