AB En el año 1074 una mujer fue llamada a apoyar una cruzada concebida por el pontífice Gregorio VII; seis siglos después se convirtió en la primera en recibir sepultura en la basílica vaticana de San Pedro. Elevada por sus contemporáneos a la categoría de “amada y digna hija de Pedro” por su excepcional desempeño en la defensa de la causa papal durante la Querella de las Investiduras, Matilde de Canossa (1046-1115) –último miembro vivo de la Casa de Canossa– supo aunar en su discurso sus compromisos políticos y el ideario sostenido por Roma. Cuestionada y condenada por la autoridad imperial, fundamentó su legitimidad como gobernante en un proyecto memorial al que destinó la mayor parte de su vida. Este, sublimado en espacios como la abadía de San Benedetto Po y en escritos como la Vita Mathildis, ofreció a la condesa un léxico polimorfo y polivalente para exponer la fama de un linaje extinto y de una mujer que todo lo fue “por la gracia de Dios”.
AB In 1074 a woman was called to support a crusade conceived by Pope Gregory VII; six centuries later she became the first to be buried in the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter. Elevated by her contemporaries to the status of "beloved worthy daughter of Peter" for her exceptional performance in defending the papal cause during the Investiture Controversy, Matilda of Tuscany (1046-1115) –the last living member of the House of Canossa– was able to combine in her speech her political commitments and the ideology upheld by Rome. Questioned and condemned by the imperial authority, she based her legitimacy as a ruler on a memorial project to which she devoted most of her life. This, sublimated in spaces such as the abbey of San Benedetto Po and in writings such as the Vita Mathildis, offered the countess a polymorphous and polyvalent lexicon to expound the fame of an extinct lineage and of a woman who was everything “for God's grace”.
