The Ravin du Bès Section, as formal candidateGSSP for the base of the Bathonian Stage, satisfies most of the requirementsrecommended by the International Commission on Stratigraphy: 1) The exposureextends over 13 m in thickness. At the Bajocian-Bathonian transition,no vertical (bio-, ichno- or tapho-) facies changes, condensation, stratigraphicgaps or hiatuses have been recorded. Structural complexity, synsedimentaryand tectonic disturbances, or important alterations by metamorphism are notrelevant constraints. 2) There is a well-preserved, abundant and diverse fossilrecord across the boundary interval, with key markers (ammonites andnannofossils) for worldwide correlation. The base of the Bathonian Stageand Zigzag Zone in Bas-Auran corresponds to the first occurrence level ofGonolkites convergens Buckman, which coincides with the first occurrence ofMorphoceras parvum Wetzel. Calcareous nannofossils, as secondary globalmarker, are present in all beds and allow characterizing the Bajocian-Bathoniantransition. 3) Regional analyses of sequence stratigraphy and manganesechemostratigraphy are available. Spectral gamma-ray data corroborate anEarly Bathonian deepening half-cycle of second order. 4) The criteria of accessibility, conservation and protection are assured by the “Réserve NaturelleGéologique de Haute Provence”. The Cabo Mondego Section (Portugal) issuggested as the Bathonian auxiliary section and point (ASSP) within thisGSSP proposal. %~
