RT Book, Section T1 Pragmatics and prosody in research on Spanish A1 Escandell Vidal, María Victoria A1 Pilar Prieto, AB This chapter reviews the current state of the art regarding the contribution of prosody to pragmatic interpretation, with a focus on different varieties of Spanish. We review recent literature on the role of prosodic variation (both intonational variation and variation in prosodic cues such as fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and speaking rate) in the interpretation of semantic and pragmatic phenomena. Such phenomena include the marking of speech act information, information structure, and epistemic and evidential meanings, as well as the marking of irony and (im)politeness implicatures. The chapter concludes by suggesting several areas for further research on the prosody-pragmatics interface.
