For the Greeks, besides representing a capital of resources in a territory with a challenging topography, the sea constituted a means of communication that enabled them to maintain commercial and political relationships with the many centres of the Greek world as such and the so-called ‘areas of expansion’. In other words, the Greek world was based fundamentally on living off the sea and around the sea. %~
