The Cid’s Lineage in History and Fiction

ABSTRACT: The lineage of Rodrigo Díaz has recently been a subject of debate. This paper strives for a better understanding with several points in this regard: that he was not a member of the upper aristocracy by birth; that he is not portrayed as a lowly «infanzón» in the «Cantar de Mio Cid», but rather as a powerful nobleman not belonging to the highest rank; that neither Rodrigo nor Jimena can be ascribed to the Flaínez family, meaning theirs was not an endogamic marriage; that she, being of royal blood, was buried at San Juan de la Peña rather than at Cardeña; that a confusion led to the poet naming one of the Cid’s daughters Elvira, with further insights on the usage of Sol as a «cognomento» also being provided; and that the hypothesis of a granddaughter called Maria marrying an alleged Count Bernat III of Besalú, should most definitely be dismissed.
RESUMEN: El linaje de Rodrigo Díaz ha sido asunto de discusión en tiempos recientes. Este artículo intenta arrojar luz sobre el tema, presentando varios argumentos: que no fue un miembro de la alta aristocracia por nacimiento; que no es presentado como infanzón en el «Cantar de Mio Cid», sino como un poderoso noble no perteneciente a la capa superior; que ni él ni su esposa fueron de la familia Flaínez, de modo que su matrimonio no puede calificarse como endogámico; que Jimena Díaz, de sangre real, fue enterrada en San Juan de la Peña, no en San Pedro de Cardeña; que en el poema una de sus hijas fue llamada Elvira por confusión, a lo que se añaden algunas precisiones sobre el uso de Sol como cognomento; y que la hipótesis de una nieta barcelonesa llamada Maria contrajo matrimonio con un conde Bernat III de Besalú debe ser descartada.
