Los orígenes de la literatura de ciencia ficción española se encuentran en el siglo XIX, bajo influencia de la narrativa científico-ficticia inglesa. En estas novelas, la narración está regida por un elemento novedoso llamado novum, que transforma el mundo presente y juega con la idea de progreso científico, político o social. De esta manera, la ciencia ficción reflexiona sobre el futuro del ser humano en torno a estos tres ejes (ciencia, política y sociedad) y plantea dos tendencias opuestas: la confianza en el progreso y el pesimismo ante una posible automatización de la vida. Así pues, se establece una clasificación de la literatura de ciencia ficción a través del papel del novum en cada narración.
The origins of science fiction Spanish literature are in the nineteenth century, under the influence of English fictional-scientist narrative. In these novels, the narration is regulated by a new element called novum, which transforms the present world and plays with the idea of scientific, political or social progress. In a certain way, science fiction reflects on the future of the human being around three concepts (Science, Politics and Society) and contemplates two contrary trends: the confidence in progress and the pessimism in light of a possible automation of life. As well, a classification of science fiction literature is established through the role of the novum in each novel.
