La articulación temporomandibular (ATM) es una articulación diartrodial y que funciona de forma simétrica, y está formada por el cóndilo mandibular y el hueso temporal. En su interior se encuentra el disco articular, estructura cartilaginosa, aneural y avascular, el cual se interpone entre la superficie glenoidea del hueso temporal y la cabeza articular del cóndilo mandibular. La patología articular más frecuente de la ATM es la relacionada con el disco articular, tanto por la alteración de su movilidad como por los cambios degenerativos que provoca su malposición. Estos cambios internos de la articulación suelen producir clínica de disfunción y dolor. Esta entidad se denomina Disfunción Temporomandibular (DTM) y existen diversas clasificaciones en relación a sus síntomas, hallazgos radiológicos y artroscópicos. Inside the joint is the articular disc, a cartilaginous, aneural and avascular structure, which interposed between the glenoid surface of the temporal bone and the articular head of the mandibular condyle. The most common joint pathology of TMJ is related to the articular disc, due to alteration of disc mobility and degenerative changes.
