Simarro was one of the founders of these new disciplines in Spain. Information is given on the practice of the diagnosis of mental and behavioural disorders related to medical, psychological and legal issues. The Galeote's affair is remembered as the first famous mental diagnosis that in Spain saved a presbyter, which had been shooting to death to whom was the bishop of Madrid-Alcalá. The presbyter was condemned but the Simarro's dIagnosis of paranoia (written together with Escuder and Vera) saved Galeote of death penalty. In other famous affair Charcot and Simarro (again written with Vera and Escuder) were involved in the diagnostic given to the Court about the mental health of D. Martin Larios. Simarro's legal report opposed successfully the Charcot's diagnostic of mental incapacity. The Simarro's and Cajal ideas on hypnosis, from a practical and theoretical point of view are also reviewed. [RESUMEN] Se revisa la situación de la neuropsiquiatría y la neuropsicología en la España de finales del siglo XIX. Simarro fue uno de los fundadores de estas disciplinas en España. Dos informes sobre la salud mental en los dos casos revisados reflejan los inicios de la práctica del diagnóstico médico y psicológico de los trastornos mentales y de conducta con fines jurídicos. El primero es el caso Galeote, en el que este presbítero que asesinó al obispo de Madrid-Alcalá y fue condenado a muerte se libró de ella en la revisión del caso por los informes médicos de Simarro, Vera y Escuder, que diagnosticaron paranoia al acusado. Otro asunto famoso en el que intervinieron Simarro y sus otros dos colegas es de Don Martín Laríos. El informe médico-legal de Simarro, que diagnosticaba la incapacidad mental del paciente, se opuso con éxito al informe de Charcot.
