El tiempo de Holt en el Centro Intercultural de Documentación (CIDOC) de Cuernavaca supuso el encuentro personal con Ivan Illich. Fue entonces cuando entró en contacto con las ideas de la desescolarización. Estas ideas son la base del giro que llevó a Holt a partir de entonces a explorar alternativas educativas fuera del ámbito propio de las instituciones escolares y que hizo que se posicionara como uno de los líderes más destacados del homeschooling/unschooling en los Estados Unidos. Esta investigación analiza a partir de fuentes históricas primarias los viajes de Holt a Cuernavaca y sus estancias en el CIDOC de Ivan Illich.Resumen en inglés: This article studies the impact that the different trips to Cuernavaca (Mexico) have on John Holt at the beginning of the 1970s. Those trips were relevant to the development of his ideas about educational institutions and to the genealogy of the homeschooling movement. The time spent by Holt at the Intercultural Documentation Center (CIDOC) in Cuernavaca meant the personal encounter with Ivan Illich. It was then that he came into contact with the ideas of de-schooling. These ideas are the basis of the turn that led Holt thereafter to explore educational alternatives outside the scope of the school institutions and that made him position himself as one of the outstanding leaders of homeschooling/unschooling in the United States. This research analyzes Holt's trips to Cuernavaca and his stays at the CIDOC of Ivan Illich from primary historical sources.Resumen en portugués: Este artigo estuda o impacto que as diferentes viagens que John Holt fez a Cuernavaca (México) no início dos anos 70 tiveram tanto para o desenvolvimento de suas ideias em torno das instituições de ensino quanto para a genealogia do movimento que a educação doméstica. O tempo de Holt no Centro de Documentação Intercultural (CIDOC) em Cuernavaca permitiu o encontro pessoal com Ivan Illich. Foi então que ele entrou em contato com as ideias de não escolarização. Essas ideias são a base da reviravolta que levouHolt a explorar alternativas educacionais fora do escopo das instituições escolares e que o levou a se posicionar como um dos líderes em educação escolar doméstica /não escolar nos Estados Unidos.
