Desde su nacimiento en el siglo XIV, estas instituciones han tenido un papel fundamental, aunque poco conocido, en la creación de emblemáticas universidades y en la formación de numerosas personalidades de la esfera política, cultural y eclesiástica. En la actualidad, aunque no gozan del esplendor que en otros tiempos los caracterizó, los Colegios siguen siendo una institución relevante del panorama universitario español, como atestiguan el amplio número de estudiantes que anualmente reside en ellos y las numerosas iniciativas formativas de alto nivel que promueven, muchas de ellas abiertas a toda la comunidad universitaria. A pesar de su longevidad y relevancia formativa, la investigación en torno a estas instituciones centenarias ha sido escasa, existiendo muy pocos estudios que analicen estos centros desde una aproximación histórica y aún menos desde un enfoque pedagógico; lo que ha generado un gran desconocimiento en la comunidad científica de las posibilidades educativas de estos espacios, que en muchas ocasiones se confunden con otras soluciones habitacionales de menor hondura educativa. Sin embargo, el excesivo énfasis de la Universidad en su función profesionalizante, el renovado interés por espacios relacionales que permitan el cultivo del carácter y la creciente atención que reciben prácticas de educación liberal, como los seminarios de Grandes Libros, están devolviendo la atención a estos centros. En este contexto, la presente investigación tiene como objetivo analizar la función educativa de los Colegios Mayores, examinando su actualidad y pertinencia frente a los desafíos contemporáneos, así como su importancia para revitalizar la vida universitaria; con el propósito de visibilizar y mejorar su labor educativa y reivindicar la función orientadora de la institución universitaria. Para ello, se establecen cinco objetivos específicos empleándose un diseño de método mixto, que utiliza el método hermenéutico-interpretativo, el comparado y el cuantitativo en distintas fases de la investigación para obtener una mirada más completa de esta institución... The “Spanish Colegios Mayores Universitarios” are among the longest-standing institutions in Spanish higher education. Since their inception in the 14th century, these institutions have played a crucial yet underrecognized role in the creation of iconic Spanish universities and in shaping numerous figures in the political, cultural, and ecclesiastical spheres. Today, although they do not enjoy the splendor they once did, the Colegios remain a significant part of the Spanish university landscape, as evidenced by the large number of students residing in them annually and the numerous high-level educational initiatives they promote, many of which are open to the entire university community.Despite their longevity and educational significance, research on these centuries-old institutions has been scant, with very few studies analyzing these centers from a historical perspective and even fewer from a pedagogical standpoint. This has resulted in a significant lack of awareness within the scientific community regarding the educational potential of these spaces, which are often confused with other residential solutions of lesser educational depth. However, the University’s excessive emphasis on its professionalizing function, the renewed interest in relational spaces that foster character development, and the growing attention given to liberal education practices, such as Great Books seminars, are refocusing attention on these centers. In this context, the present research aims to analyze the educational role of the Colegios Mayores, examining their current relevance and pertinence in the face of contemporary challenges, as well as their importance in revitalizing university life. The goal is to highlight and improve their educational work and to advocate for the guiding function of the University institution.
