A través de estos "papeles" que nos consta llevaba siempre consigo este soldado, conocemos su trayectoria militar, sus ascensos, las acciones en las que participó y murió (Nordlingen), así como la opinión que de él tenían sus superiores. Además, es una fuente de primera mano para conocer el funcionamiento y estructura de los Tercios, los traslados de sus oficiales y sus funciones específicas en un momento crítico para la maquinaria militar de la Monarquía en su lucha por mantener la hegemonía política en Europa. Como documentación administrativa, podemos rastrear sus vicisitudes, primero como archivo personal y luego, tras su muerte y remisión desde Alemania a sus familiares, su utilización para solicitar una pensión por los méritos del fallecido al Consejo de Guerra, que la consultó y emitió informe favorable para luego devolverla al peticionario. Tras su vida útil, la documentación fue conservada por la familia, y hoy día se ha encontrado en el Archivo Municipal del Ayuntamiento de Castillejo de la Sierra (Cuenca).This paper examines a unique set of documents: the service record of Alfonso de Noguerol, an infantryman in the Spanish Tercios who fought in Italy and Germany in the service of the Hispanic monarchy in the first third of the 17th century. These documents, which were always carried by the soldier, provide us with valuable information about his military career, promotions, the operations in which he took part and eventually died (Nordlingen) and also the opinion he deserved on the part of his superiors. The service record of Alfonso de Noguerol is, moreover, a primary source of knowledge of some of the specific features of the Spanish Tercios —such as their functioning, inner structure or the way the officers were transferred— at a time when the Hispanic monarchy was struggling to maintain its political and military supremacy in Europe. This set of documents is also of interest from an administrative point of view since it enables us to track their procedural history. They were used firstly as a personal record of service. Later, after Alfonso de Noguerol’s death, the documents were sent from Germany to his relatives in order to request the Council of War for a pension on his merit.
