Se plantean dos hipótesis complementarias. Por un lado, demostraré que el significado y la estructura de la narrativa son el resultado de la tensión que guardan los dos temas que subyacen la saga: la sobreestimación de la familia natal y los efectos ominosos de un destino asociado al impulso codicioso. En la superficie, estos temas están aparentemente aislados, pero una vez detectamos los patrones narrativos y sus estructuras, daremos cuenta de que guardan una relación profunda. Por ello, estos temas no pueden entenderse si son analizados de forma separada. Así, demostraré que las obligaciones impuestas por la estructura de parentesco son representadas con la misma inexorabilidad que la imposición de un destino inflexible. Las consecuencias de estas obligaciones estructurales producen la misma destrucción que las actitudes avaras que motiva la maldición de Andvari. Aún más, veremos que ambos elementos sufrirán el mismo castigo moral, pues tanto la codicia y la lealtad hacia cierto tipo de honor transformará al sujeto humano y lo arrastrará al dominio de la bestialidad...The aim of this thesis (“En engi má við skǫpum vinna: The Representation of Kinship Structure as Destiny in Vǫlsunga saga and its Relationship to Social Structure in Medieval Northern Europe”) is to use an anthropological approach to analyse the meaning of Vǫlsunga saga and how it relates to the context of production. Two different but complementary hypotheses are established. On the one hand, I will demonstrate that the meaning and the structure of this narrative are the result of the friction between two themes that underlie the saga: the overemphasis on the natal family and the ominous effects of a fate linked to a greed drive. On the surface, these topics are apparently isolated, but once we detect the narrative patterns and their structures, we will notice that there is a deep and hidden relationship between them. Admittedly, these topics can hardly be understood if they are analysed separately. Hence, I will demonstrate that the obligations imposed by kinship structure are as inexorable as the imposition of an inflexible fate. The consequences of these structural obligations produce the same destructiveness as greedy attitudes that the curse of Andvari triggers. Furthermore, both elements will suffer the same moral punishment, as greed and loyalty to certain kind of honour would transform the human subject and drag him into the domain of bestiality.The second hypothesis states that the message and nucleuses of meaning of the saga are related to contextual situations.
