La caracterización y el estadiaje de la enfermedad hepática crónica es uno de los principales retos en la práctica clínica, siendo fundamental para el manejo y tratamiento de estos pacientes. En este contexto, es bien conocido que el hígado experimenta cambios de tamaño a lo largo de la historia natural de la enfermedad, consistiendo característicamente en un agrandamiento inicial (hepatomegalia) seguido de una atrofia progresiva. El tamaño del hígado y los cambios que experimenta, por tanto, podrían ayudar a determinar el estadio de la enfermedad hepática crónica. La hipótesis del presente trabajo fue que la disminución de tamaño o atrofia del hígado representa un hito crucial en la historia natural de la enfermedad hepática crónica que se asocia a cambios fundamentales en el perfil clínico, analítico, pronóstico, de expresión génica hepática y extra-hepática, y de la microbiota intestinal...Chronic liver disease is one of the leading health problems worldwide due to its enormous incidence and severity. The characterization and staging of chronic liver disease is one of the main challenges of clinical practice, being fundamental for managing and treating these patients. In this context, it is well known that the liver undergoes changes in size throughout the natural history of the disease, characteristically consisting of an initial enlargement (hepatomegaly) followed by progressive atrophy.
