Social work with groups of adolescents: a literature review
(Social Work with Groups, 2020) Arias Astray, Andrés; Ducca Cisneros, Linda Vanina
Social work with groups of adolescents is a constituent part of social work practice, research, and training. However, little is known about the overall characteristics of the academic production related to group work with this population. This literature review explores 112 articles in social work journals for the period 2000–2017 focusing on the characteristics of the journals and content. The presence of the topic is not evenly distributed and has an Anglophone origin. The focus of the articles is mainly on the methodology of intervention with active and participatory activities. Although the production is not abundant, articles promote theory and practice integration.

Digital social group work: evolution, state of the art and renewed research agenda
(The Routledge International Handbook of Digital Social Work, 2023) Ducca Cisneros, Linda Vanina; Brea Iglesias, Juan; Alonso González, David; Arias Astray, Andrés; Lopez Peláez, Antonio; Kirwan, Gloria
This chapter systematically reviews the social work scholarly literature to investigate the origins, evolution and state of the art of digital social work with groups. Two academic databases “Social Work Abstracts” and “Social Services Abstracts” were explored to identify the most relevant papers on this topic in the period from the early 1990s to the present. A total of 167 papers were selected and analyzed. The results highlight the main trends and changes in e-social group work in the selected time period. The analysis also classifies the types of papers published, the most relevant authors, the needs or problems focused on, the types of groups developed and the technologies that were employed. The chapter questions if the accelerated and widespread digitization arising from COVID-19 has had any significant impact on e-social group work reports. The chapter ends by proposing a renewed agenda for the specialized field of digital social work with groups among practitioners, researchers and educators. Special emphasis is also placed on how the social work curriculum can best prepare students to meet the anticipated future demand for online social work practice with groups in the years to come.

Art as a way of improving participatory action research: an experience with youngsters with an intellectual disability and their families
(Social work research using arts-based methods, 2022) García Román, Carlota; Ducca Cisneros, Linda Vanina; Arias Astray, Andrés; González Casas, David; Bos, Eltje; Huss, Ephrat
This chapter describes the use of different artistic expression strategies in a participatory action research process. The protagonists of this project are young people with intellectual disabilities and their families in the context of a socio- occupational training programme at the university. The main objective of the research is to explore themes around the overprotection– autonomy continuum from the participants’ perspectives. A set of artistic techniques from different disciplines (visual art, performing art, and music) were used as a means to discuss and define the terms and their implications. Critically, this was in a participatory manner. At the beginning, the young people and their parents worked separately and independently following the same research steps and performing similar activities. The process and the methodology created opportunities to bridge the gap and increase mutual understanding that would not be possible through the daily interactions of normal life. Concrete examples are presented that highlight the benefits and difficulties of introducing activities not commonly found in a university environment. The analysis also includes a critical reflection about the possible use of art techniques in participatory action research projects with people with intellectual disabilities.

Participation of youth in group social intervention programmes in Madrid: a qualitative study focused on participants’ experiences.
(European Journal of Social Work, 2023) Ducca Cisneros, Linda Vanina; Arias Astray, Andrés
In Spain, there are many social intervention programmes aimed at promoting the participation of teenagers and young people considered to be at risk of social exclusion. However, there is no consensus on the term’s definition, meaning and scope. Moreover, young people have a scant presence in research on social work. This research aims to define ‘participation’ by emphasising young people’s perspectives and experiences. Over 120 adolescents from 13 to 23 years old who were part of four different social intervention programmes in the academic year 2018–2019 took part in the research, giving their opinions and points of view. This qualitative study uses Grounded Theory as general guidance for obtaining data and analysis, stressing situated and critical perspectives. The research techniques were adapted to each group: group work processes and group discussions, with the help of art. The results showed guidelines for promoting participation in four areas: the roles of young people in participation; the role of institutions and professionals; the socio-structural context as an impediment or imperative for participation, and the possibilities of participation enabled by democratic group processes.
