Sexual initiation for heterosexual individuals in northern Chile
(Sexuality Research and Social Policy, 2010) Barrientos Delgado, Jaime Eduardo
This article reports on a study conducted in northern Chile that examined first sexual intercourse and its characteristics, especially prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Using a psychosocial approach, the author assessed sexual initiation experiences of heterosexual men and women ages 18 to 69. Interviews showed that Chilean men constructed themselves as desiring subjects and women as without desire, reproducing cultural images of male and female sexuality. Women gave more importance to affection as a precondition for sex, although the number of women whose sexual initiation was motivated by curiosity has increased. The author found age synchronization of young Chilean men’s and women’s age at sexual initiation but, in contrast to trends in other Western countries, no greater early initiation in younger generations. Results suggest that effective approaches to preventing pregnancy and STDs in Chilean youth would emphasize contraceptive use for men and sexual relationship management for women

The attitudes toward lesbians and gay men scale (ATLG): Adaptation and testing the reliability and validity in Chile
(Journal of sex research, 2008) Barrientos Delgado, Jaime Eduardo; Cárdenas, Manuel
Previous researchers have used the attitudes toward lesbians and gay men (ATLG) scale (Herek, 1988) and reported their own reliability coefficients and validity measures, but research on this subject is scarce in Chile. In order to determine if ATLG scale was a reliable and valid instrument in our country, we adapted and examined the psychometrics properties using a sample composed of 142 psychology and economics undergraduate students. This study found the ATLG scale to be reliable (a = .90) and valid for the Chilean population and is a recommended instrument for measuring attitudes toward gay men and lesbians.

HIV prevalence, AIDS knowledge, and condom use among female sex workers in Santiago, Chile
(Cadernos de saúde pública, 2007) Barrientos Delgado, Jaime Eduardo; Bozon, Michel; Ortiz, Edith; Arrendondo, Annabella
This paper describes HIV seroprevalence, knowledge of HIV transmission, and condom use among female sex workers (FSW) attending five specialized sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Santiago, Chile. A short questionnaire with socio-demographic, AIDS knowledge, and condom-use variables was administered to 626 FSW. HIV seroprevalence was estimated with a blood test sent to the Chilean Public Health Institute. ELISA was used to confirm HIV in suspected cases. HIV prevalence was 0%. FSW showed adequate overall knowledge of HIV, even better than reported for the Chilean general population on some items. Condom use with clients was high (“always” = 93.4%), although regular use with steady partners was low (“always” = 9.9%). The zero HIV seroprevalence and consistent condom use with clients confirms the positive impact of intervention strategies for FSW, increasing both correct knowledge of AIDS and condom use with clients and helping decrease these women’s HIV/AIDS vulnerability.
