    Models of recovery: Influence of psychosocial factors on substance use recovery

    Background: The aim of this study is to analyze several psychosocial factors such as gender, legal or illegal substance use (alcohol and cocaine use), age, employment and social support to determine models of recovery. Methods: quantitative research. Data from 2179 people receiving recovery treatment were extracted from EuropASI surveys, collected from the PH Nemos and Minerva databases. A two factor multivariate and two univariate analysis of covariance were performed. The dependent variables were alcohol and years of cocaine use, the factors were gender and leisure social network, and the co-variables were age and number of people in the social network. Post-hoc tests were performed to analyze the differences among the five different leisure social network categories, and alcohol and cocaine use. Results: Variables with the biggest influence on recovery are age, gender, and leisure social network. Two models of recovery with significant differences can be identified (Model 1/alcohol use, Model 2/cocaine use); for the alcohol model, individual leisure was the most important risk condition, while for the cocaine model individual leisure was the most important protective condition. Conclusions: personal and social recovery adapted to the different characteristics of the people is essential to increase social integration and participation.

    Psychosocial Intervention in European Addictive Behaviour Recovery Programmes: A Qualitative Study

    Background: The vulnerability of drug users in treatment increases their risk of social exclusion. Psychosocial interventions aim to solve or minimise this risk, increasing socialintegration for individuals in treatment. In this study, the effectiveness of various European drug recovery programmes was studied by examining psychosocial intervention groups with vulnerable populations. Methods: Research was conducted utilising qualitative methodology in the following manner: bibliographical review (reports and papers) and 18 interviews with key informants (from nine European countries). Results: Treatment programmes were found to be effective for recovery from opiate use, however, social recovery programmes were not found to be effective. For females in treatment and young drug users, the adequacy of programmes received medium-to-low evaluations. Conclusion: It is necessary to increase the effectiveness of psychosocial intervention in recovery-based programmes. In addition, the relevance of these programmes in relation to psychosocial characteristics of the various risk groups (except opioid consumers) should be validated and revisited. Additionally, psychosocial intervention professionals should take a more active role in such programmes, especially in intervention with young people (in health education, prevention, early detection, and intervention) and with women (in regard to the detection and effective intervention for socio-health problems, social and job reintegration, access inequality, and use of services available due to gender).

    Los programas de recuperación en la intervención de los trastornos por abusos de sustancias: buenas prácticas europeas

    a) Introducción: los programas basados en recuperación de conductas adictivas han evolucionado desde las comunidades terapéuticas tradicionales hasta las intervenciones actuales, integradas en las redes sanitarias y sociales, desarrolladas por equipos multidisciplinares profesionales. Esa evolución no ha sido sistemática hasta el siglo XXI, con la aparición de la “Ciencia de la Recuperación”. b) Objetivos: analizar el desarrollo de los programas de recuperación, specialmente los modelos teóricos y las buenas prácticas que se desarrollan actualmente en los programas europeos. c) Desarrollo del tema: se analizan cuatro modelos teóricos, relacionados con la recuperación desde una perspectiva científica y previamente documentados, relacionados con buenas prácticas. d) Conclusiones: la “Ciencia de la Recuperación” está avanzando hacia modelos y programas validados, replicables y medibles. Sigue siendo necesario adecuar los programas basados en recuperación a las necesidades y particularidades de personas y grupos específicos.

    Mindfulness aplicado al aula universitaria

    El Mindfulness, literalmente traducido como atención o conciencia plena, es una de las múltiples formas de meditación que se basa en centrar la mente en el momento presente. En otras palabras, es un estado de conciencia que se desarrolla prestando una atención concreta, sostenida y deliberada sin juzgar las experiencias del aquí y del ahora. La mayoría de los estudios sobre los efectos de la práctica continuada del Mindfulness se han realizado en contextos clínicos y laborales. Se disponen de suficientes resultados que muestran que los beneficios del Mindfulness están relacionados con la salud, el bienestar psicológico, las competencias sociales o el rendimiento académico de niños y adolescentes. Sin embargo, son pocos los estudios que se han llevado a cabo en el contexto educativo universitario y, más específicamente, en relación con estudiantes universitarios.
