    Cartografía de dominios litosféricos y estilo de deformación en el margen continental de Galicia (margen noroeste de la Península Ibérica)

    El margen continental de Galicia presenta una estructura muy compleja, debido a dos efectos principales. Por un lado, se trata de un margen de rift pobre en magma, generado en las proximidades del punto triple R-R-R que dio lugar a la apertura simultánea del Océano Atlántico y el golfo de Vizcaya durante el Cretácico. Por otra parte, el régimen de esfuerzos compresivo Cenozoico generó la inversión parcial del margen continental hacia el norte y el noroeste, aportando una mayor complejidad estructural. En este trabajo hemos realizado un análisis detallado de la nueva información gravimétrica y batimétrica obtenida durante las campañas del Proyecto ZEE, así como de nuevos perfiles de sísmica de reflexión multicanal procedentes del Proyecto ERGAP. Presentamos aquí parte de los resultados de este análisis conjunto de toda la información geofísica y geológica disponible, consistentes en una cartografía continua de los diferentes dominios litosféricos y del tipo de deformación que los afectan, desde el margen oeste de la Península Ibérica hasta el margen norte.

    Mapa de esfuerzos de Europa a partir de Mecanismos focales calculados desde el Tensor de Momento Sísmico

    This work shows a new stress map for Europe obtained from the inversion of earthquakes focal mechanisms calculated with the centroid tensor method (Dzieownski et al., 1982). An amount of 1608 focal mechanisms have been selected with several quality criteria from different catalogues (CMT Harvard, ETH, Med-Net, I.G.N. and I.A.G.) from 1973 to present-day. Values for the maximum horizontal stress and the shape factor of the ellipsoid (horizontal/vertical stress) have been calculated following the Reches (1983) and De Vicente (1988) slip model. The local results have been interpolated to a 1ºx1º regular grid in which the relation between tectonic horizontal stress and vertical load has been taken into account. The final map shows a good correlation with the primary tectonic forces generated in the plate boundaries and the local perturbations related with main crustal heterogeneities as suggested by Gölke and Coblentz (1996).

    Waste dump erosional landform stability – a critical issue for mountain mining

    Mining is the largest producer of solid wastes which, when released to land or into waterways, can cause harmful environmental impacts. This is mostly due to fluvial erosion, which is highly increased in mountain areas, due to abrupt slopes. We have analysed this situation at a mountain watershed (192 ha), where steep mined sites and their waste dumps are the main source of sediment in a Natural Park. This problem was tackled by building gabion check dams downstream from the mined sites. We used the DEM of Differences (DoD) method to quantify erosion and sediment yield from three waste dumps (5 ha). Their topography and substrate properties were analysed to understand the erosion problem. The sediment trapped by the check dams was quantified by Electrical Resistivity Tomography. The rainfall characteristics triggering an episode that filled the check dams with sediment in the winter of 2009-2010, were studied to confirm whether it was a case of extreme precipitation conditions. The waste dumps sediment yield (353 ± 95 Mg ha-1 yr-1) suggests severe landform instability. Analysis of topographic and substrate properties confirmed long, steep slopes combined with highly erodible materials. The check dams proved to be inefficient in controlling sediment loads, as they had only functioned for four years of 31 of existence, having trapped 13000 ± 660 m3 of sediment, whereas we estimated that the waste dumps have yielded approximately three times more sediment for the same period. Rainfall analyses showed that neither intense nor extreme conditions (return period of 25-35 years) triggered the mobilization of 37 ± 2 Mg ha-1 in a month. This study highlights the fact that mining operations in similar mountainous settings, with equivalent waste dump construction and reclamation practices, are currently unfeasible. We conclude that landform stability cannot be achieved at this site without landform changes.

    Caracterización geofísica y mineralógica de las formaciones superficiales de la Cuenca del río Loa (desierto de Atacama, Chile)

    Durante 2015 tuvo lugar una exploración geotécnica y geofísica en el desierto de Atacama (Chile) para el diseño de una planta solar fotovoltaica. Los datos de resistividad obtenidos en la Fm. El Batea resultaron extremadamente elevados (107Ω•m), por lo que se llevó a cabo un muestreo de las unidades geológicas presentes para su estudio mineralógico mediante difracción de rayos X (DRX). La composición mineral de la Fm. El Batea muestra una casi total ausencia de humedad y una muy baja porosidad. Estos factores producen que la componente electrolítica en esta formación sea casi despreciable, y su comportamiento eléctrico coincide con la conductividad de sus fases minerales casi en estado puro. Estas características se deben a las extremas condiciones ambientales en el desierto de Atacama. La formación El Batea ha supuesto una barrera a la evapotranspiración, siendo los valores de resistividad de la formación infrayacente prácticamente normales (103-104Ω•m).

    Resultados y experiencias de aplicación del método de Refracción por Microtremor (Sísmica Pasiva) para la investigación geofísica de las nuevas líneas de metro en Madrid (España)

    Geophysical exploration with seismic methods in urban zones presents several disadvantages: the presence of numerous sources of seismic noise, the scanty penetration when the seismic source is a hammer and the disability to detect buried low-velocity beds. Recently (Louie, 2001) a new method of seismic investigation has been developed, which allows vertical modeling of Raleygh waves from spectral analysis (Vphase/frequency) using the seismic signal registered with conventional seismographs and geophones. This method allows to detect low-velocity buried beds of great interest in tunneling, and to reach depths below 50 meters. In this work we discuss the conditions of application and experiences obtained during the 2005 geophysical surveys carried out in Madrid before the excavation of the new subway tunnels.

    Aplicación del método de resistividades con SEV para la caracterización hidrogeológica de la cuenca de Dajla (Argelia)

    The aim of this study is the hydrogeological exploration and characterization using Geophisical surveying in the vicinity of Dakhla Basin (Algeria). To that end, it has been used the method of resistivities through Vertical Electric Sounding (VES) on a campaign carried out in April 2009. The work included 19 VES, which have been calibrated with existing wells and with field geological observations. The results have allowed the characterization of Tertiary deposits as well as Ordovician sandstones. With these data, it has been possible to identify the position and thickness of a shallow salty aquifer, and the roof of a deep freshwater aquifer developed on the Ordovician sandstones. The integration of the geometry of the aquifers with the resistivity values obtained in the Ordovician sandstones has allowed the location of a favorable area for the situation of a new well.

    La deformación alpina en el Sistema Central Español

    La idea del origen compresivo del Sistema Central (SC) se debe a Birot y Solé Sabarís (1954) [1], antes del establecimiento del papel que la tectónica de placas juega en el desarrollo de las estructuras intraplaca. Sin embargo, sus observaciones de campo no fueron tenidas en cuenta y, durante mucho tiempo, el SC fue considerado como una estructura extensiva [2]. Los primeros modelos de estructura del SC, en un contexto compresivo intraplaca, fueron propuestos por Vegas y Suriñach (1987) [3], que calcularon un engrosamiento cortical de 5 km, mientras que Warburton y Álvarez (1989) [4] construyeron una sección transversal con el desarrollo de una tectónica de piel fina asociada a un detachment intracortical proveniente de las Béticas y con un acortamiento asociado de 50 km. Esta idea fue también propuesta con menos detalle para el sector portugués, pero en relación a un estilo tectónico de piel gruesa y un acortamiento menor [5]. No obstante, estos trabajos carecían de observaciones de campo. En concreto, la sección de Warburton y Álvarez adolece de numerosas inconsistencias. El estilo tectónico propuesto durante la celebración de la III reunión de la Comisión de Tectónica de la SGE, que es el que se tiene en cuenta hoy en día, fue el de una tectónica de piel gruesa, sin despegues en la cobertera, con la formación de cabalgamientos imbricados de piel fina con implicación del basamento y pop ups dentro del basamento varisco de direcciones NE-SO a E-O. El acortamiento asociado se calculó en un 14% (20 km) [6, 7].

    Alboran basin, Southern Spain. Part II: Neogene tectonic implications for the orogenic float model

    We infer that the Alboran Basin, the first western Mediterranean Basin found after crossing Gibraltar, is an orogenic float underlained by a de´ collement system, a multi-layered ductile shear extending from 10km to between 30 and 40km below sea level. This float was formed as consequence of the collision of the African–Eurasian plates in the Oligocene–late Miocene. Synchronous with this compression the float experienced basin wide crustal thinning and subsidence about 25 m/year ago by subcrustal processes. Since latest Miocene the float has undergone compression due to the continuous convergence of Eurasia and Africa. The faults created as a result of this compression are dominated by a conjugate system of northeast trending left-lateral and northwest right-lateral strike–slip faults. This deformation is taking place under a simple shear mechanism. Associated with the northwest and northeast lateral faults are zones of compression trending west and east of north extending from the base of the basin’s north upper slope to the Alboran Ridge. The initial morphology of the Alboran Ridge on the southern side of the Alboran Basin was due to the construction of a volcanic edifice at the northeast end of the ridge and igneous activity along northeast trending fractures southwest of the edifice. At the northeast end of the Alboran Ridge motion along a right-lateral fault cutting across the ridge led to sediment collapse and the creation of a prominent embayment on the ridge’s northwest flank. Deformation is more subdued in the western than in the eastern part of the Alboran Basin, a tectonic style due either to differences in sediment rheology or that the accommodation of the convergence of Africa and Iberia is more diffused and attenuated in the west than in the east.

    Survey explores active tectonics in Northeastern Caribbean

    There is renewed interest in studying the active and complex northeastern Caribbean plate boundary to better understand subduction zone processes and for earthquake and tsunami hazard assessments [e.g., ten Brink and Lin, 2004; ten Brink et al., 2004; Grindlay et al, 2005]. To study the active tectonics of this plate boundary, the GEOPRICO-DO (Geological, Puerto Rico-Dominican) marine geophysical cruise, carried out between 28 March and 17 April 2005 (Figure 1), studied the active tectonics of this plate boundary. Initial findings from the cruise have revealed a large underwater landslide, and active faults on the seafloor (Figures 2a and 2c). These findings indicate that the islands within this region face a high risk from tsunami hazards, and that local governments should be alerted in order to develop and coordinate possible mitigation strategies. The cruise collected multibeam bathymetry, gravity, magnetic, high-resolution seismic, deep seismic sounding, and multichannel seismic reflection data, which are currently being processed and interpreted (Table 1). In early November 2005, 10 ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) that had been deployed northeast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands (Figure 1) during the cruise were recovered. These OBS recorded data during the cruise and the local seismicity between April and October 2005.
