The Periplus of Pseudo-Skylax and its Relationship with Earlier Nautical Knowledge
(The Mariner's Mirror, 2022) Mauro, Chiara María
This study focuses on the Periplus of Pseudo-Skylax, a controversial document from the late fourth century bc. Despite diverging views on its date and authorship, scholars agree this text could have derived most of its information from earlier and non-extant, nautical sources. This article contributes to addressing gaps and limitations concerning the Periplus’s relevance and the forms in which such currently lost information circulated at the time of, and preceding, its publication. Its aim is to identify the contents in the Periplus of Pseudo-Skylax which the author could have obtained from earlier nautical sources; compare them with other, maritime-derived extant documents; and further analyse this information from a practical and sailing perspective.

Nuestro criterio había de ser mucho más beneficioso para la ciencia: Vives Escudero’s contribution to Phoenicio-Punic archaeology in the contemporary cultural context
    (Lucentum, 2021) Mauro, Chiara María
Antonio Vives Escudero is a key figure in understanding the rising interest in antiquities in early 20th-century Spain. However, scholars have more frequently acknowledged his role as a collector or antiquarian rather than his involvement in contemporary intellectual debate. On the one hand, it is true that, at this stage, it is difficult to discern antiquarianism from archaeology; additionally, such a categorisation contributed to underlining some of Vives’strong points (e.g. his commercial instinct). Conversely, this interpretation has undermined his intellectual role, reducing the importance of his contribution to the development of Phoenicio-Punic archaeology in Spain. Therefore, the general aim of this contribution is twofold. It contextualises Vives into the wider scenario of the rising interest in Phoenicio-Punic archaeology and addresses the central question of whether, behind his commercial and collecting interests, he made a real contribution to the development of Phoenicio-Punic archaeology in Spain.

(L'Archeologo Subacqueo. Semestrale di archeologia subacquea e navale, 2020) Mauro, Chiara María
The phrase λιμὴν κλειστός (rendered differently in scholarship as “closed/closable/enclosed harbour”) has come under much discussion; however, there is no agreement on its meaning so far. Though attempts to interpret this phrase date back as far as the 19th century, the majority of them have adopted a philological approach, frequently assuming the static nature of the phrase over time. In contrast, this paper arises from written sources (particularly, it employs the Periplus of Pseudo-Skylax and the Geography by Strabo) and compare them with the available archaeological and geological data.

Sailing Directions. Echoes of Ancient Nautical Knowledge in the Periplous of Ps.-Skylax
(Our Beloved Polites: Studies presented to P.J. Rhodes, 2021) Mauro, Chiara María; Leão, Delfim; Ferreira, Daniela; Simões Rodrigues, Nuno; Morais, Rui
This contribution explores how seafaring was practiced in Antiquity through the analysis of the data contained within the Periplous of Ps.-Skylax. Since the Periplous of Ps. -Skylax relies on maritime information dated between the 6th and the end of the 4th century BC, all the bservations presented here should be mainly referred to pre-Hellenistic seafaring. In particular, the focus will be on the way in which three different kinds of information were possibly disseminated amongst seafarers: what course to steer, how far to sail to reach the desired destination and how to sail (i.e. decisions on hugging the coast or crossing directly from one island to another, or on where and when to stop to refurbish the ships).
